Description
of generous size, affixed with two gilt-edged double-scroll baroque handles, the cover with a green-edged pinecone finial, each piece painted with two quails beside a flowering branch of prunus and shrubs and scattered sprigs, brown-edged rims, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue, Dreher’s mark and incised numeral 4 to inside edge of footrim

Tureens of this form were included in the Meissen Kakiemon ‘Gelber Löwe’ service, begun by 1734, for Augustus III of Poland, and originally intended for the Japanese Palace in Dresden. A comparable example of a tureen of this form from the ‘Gelber Löwe’ service, was with Elfriede Langeloh, Weinheim, and offered on 15 May 2022, lot 17.
