Lot Details

Description

probably modelled by J. J. Kändler, the exteriors moulded with basketwork and affixed with two handles terminating in masks, allegorical of the Seasons, picked out in Böttger lustre and enamels, painted with scattered Kakiemon-style flower sprigs, one with a wheatsheaf, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue

Width 19 cm; 7 ½ in

Antiquitäten Metz, Heidelberg, 19 May 2018, lot 602;

Acquired at the above sale.

See Julia Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbilden, Band II, Munich, 2013, p. 188, cat. no. 159 for two baskets of the same form and with similar decoration to the interiors. This basket shape is first mentioned in Kändler's work records for November 1733, though it probably predates this entry and was likely made in three sizes.
