Apel·les Fenosa, a major figure of 20th-century Catalan sculpture, developed an artistic language that combines lyricism with formal rigor. Having settled in Paris as early as 1920, he moved among leading avant-garde figures such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Paul Éluard, and Jean Cocteau, drawing intellectual and poetic nourishment from these encounters.

His work is characterized by slender, fluid forms—often feminine—where mythological inspiration, poetic sensitivity, and the influence of nature blend together. Fenosa favored bronze and terracotta, using delicate patinas that enhance the modeling and refinement of his figures. Themes of motherhood, mythology, and poetry recur throughout his oeuvre, giving it a timeless and universal dimension.

The work presented here perfectly embodies this distinctive aesthetic: the sculpture combines restraint and elegance while expressing Fenosa’s technical virtuosity and his ability to infuse palpable emotion into the material. It attests to the importance of the human figure in his body of work and to his harmonious approach to volume and movement.

Apel·les Fenosa remains an essential reference in modern Catalan sculpture, and his works—now held in museums and private collections across Europe and beyond—continue to captivate through their poetry and expressive power.
