Richard Mille

Introduced in 2008, the Richard Mille RM 018 Tourbillon “Hommage à Boucheron” stands among the most extraordinary collaborative creations in contemporary haute horlogerie. Conceived to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Parisian jeweler Boucheron, the RM 018 united two maisons renowned for pushing the limits of their respective crafts: Richard Mille, the avant-garde and technically driven watchmaker, and his close friend Jean-Christophe Bédos, President of Boucheron, the celebrated high jeweler and maison of artisans. The result was neither purely a watch nor a jewel, but a remarkable synthesis of both disciplines.

At the heart of the RM 018 is the manually wound tourbillon movement. True to Richard Mille’s uncompromising technical philosophy, the RM 018 was notably the first Richard Mille wristwatch to feature a movement constructed using sapphire crystal plates, representing a remarkable technical achievement. It was the expertise developed during the creation of the RM 018 that later proved instrumental in the development of the groundbreaking crystal-cased RM056 and RM56-01 models.

At the crux of the partnership between watchmaker and jeweler, and serving as its most striking visual manifestation, is the integration of precious and semi-precious stones directly into the calibre itself, transforming gemstones from decorative accents into structural and aesthetic components of the mechanism. This radical approach elevated gem-setting into an intrinsic element of the watch’s construction, creating a movement unlike anything previously attempted in modern watchmaking. Each example of the RM 018 was individually adorned by Boucheron, ensuring that no two watches were identical, with each case back appropriately engraved “Unique Piece.” Examples are known featuring mother-of-pearl, white agate, lapis lazuli, onyx, and jasper, while the present example incorporates Tiger’s Eye, distinguished by its golden-brown, honey, bronze, and caramel tones. The gemstone has been used for centuries across numerous cultures. In ancient Rome, soldiers carried Tiger’s Eye as a talisman for courage and protection in battle, while in Eastern traditions it has long been associated with grounding, focus, and prosperity. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tiger’s Eye became particularly popular in gentlemen’s jewelry, cufflinks, signet rings, and objets d’art due to its rich appearance and durability.

The production process was exceptionally laborious, requiring extensive hand-finishing and gem-setting, with only five examples able to be completed annually. Ultimately, the model was limited to just 30 pieces in total, placing it among the rarest and most exclusive Richard Mille creations ever produced.

Visually, the RM 018 remains unmistakably Richard Mille, with its signature tonneau-shaped case. Here, however, the white gold bezel has been decorated with deep vertical ridges, a clear homage to the iconic Reflet range of watches first introduced by Boucheron in 1947. The incorporation of richly colored gemstones lends the watch an entirely different character from other Richard Mille creations, softening the overtly technical aesthetic with a sophistication and opulence associated with the great Place Vendôme jewelers. The tension between mechanical modernity and classical jewelry craftsmanship is precisely what gives the RM 018 its enduring fascination.

Today, the RM 018 Tourbillon Boucheron is regarded as one of the most imaginative and ambitious collaborations ever undertaken by Richard Mille. Produced in minute numbers and rarely appearing publicly, it represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of ultra-high-end contemporary watchmaking, where mechanical innovation and artistic métiers were fused at the very highest level.
