The Rolex Daytona stands as one of the most celebrated wristwatch designs in horological history, its many references and variations drawing generations of collectors. The enduring link between Daytonas and racing has connected Rolex to the prestigious world of motorsports and its history was built on the wrists of some of the most celebrated drivers in history.

Among them, the manually wound Daytonas remain the most coveted, representing the earliest and most authentic expression of the model. These early four-digit references, from 6239 through 6264, featured non-Oyster cases with pump pushers, while later references 6263 and 6265 introduced the first Oyster cases, incorporating screw-down pushers and greater water resistance, giving them a more substantial presence on the wrist.

The present Reference 6263 is distinguished by its highly sought-after “Big Red” dial, referring to the bold red Daytona signature above the 6 o’clock sub-dial, and a backstory befitting of a timepiece that was born to race.

A former Formula Atlantic racer in the SCCA club series, the original owner had a passion for exploring both the skies and the racetrack, with the present 6263 reliably accompanying the original owner on his across the country in the cockpit or on the steering wheel. A modern Renaissance Man, he was a notable figure in multiple fields with two doctorates and would regularly pull up to his job as a Professor of Psychology in his Porsche. His passion for racing was matched only by his love for the outdoors, having explored Antarctica and hiked Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest. Much like the iconic status of the Rolex Daytona which has inspired generations of connoisseurs, his legacy of excellence in academia and zest for life has inspired countless students and friends, his life of extraordinary achievement the epitome of a Rolex Explorer.
