In 1966, Dalí created two medals for the "Monnaie de Paris" and started minting his own currency known as the "Dalí d'Or". Representing himself and his wife and muse, Gala, the coins were made over a ten year period in conjunction with Huguenin Frères and had four denominations ranging from half a Dalí d'Or to five Dalí d'Or. Each coin is individually numbered and one side depicts the faces of Salvador and Gala Dalí, the reverse features abstract surrealist motifs.
The present model is the result of a collaboration between Yves Piaget and Salvador Dalí where two half Dali d'Or coins are crafted into cufflinks.
