Louis Vuitton is famed for crafting some of the most important trunks for the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Greta Garbo in the early 20th century, and the House has since built upon its trunkmaking legacy to create a luxury juggernaut spanning the categories of couture, jewelry and watches.
Created in 2002, the Tambour collection was one of the House's early designs for the watch market, and it quickly became an icon in Louis Vuitton's lineup of watches. Ten years after the creation of the Tambour, the House launched a more feminine interpretation of the collection in 2012: the Tambour Monogram, which highlights Louis Vuitton’s haute couture heritage, with the clover from the brand’s iconic Monogram flower taking center stage on the dial. The 10 year launch of the Tambour Monogram also coincides with Louis Vuitton's acquisition of La Fabrique du Temps in 2011 to serve as the brand’s specialized Swiss watch manufacture in Meyrin, Geneva. Established in 2007 by master watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, La Fabrique brings together designers, engineers, and artisans to create innovative timepieces under a vertically integrated manufacture.
The present Tambour Monogram 'Sun' Tourbillon was unveiled during BaselWorld in 2015 and marries haute couture with haute horology by incorporating the petals of the Louis Vuitton flower into the bridges of a one-minute Tourbillon. In the heart of the 18k pink gold diamond-set case beats the in-house self winding caliber LV80, the Tambour Monogram 'Sun' Tourbillon boasts a frequency of 28,800 vph and a 60-hour power reserve. The timepiece is further highlighted by the snow-set diamonds and guillochéd mother-of-pearl clover dial and a striking set of white Louis Vuitton alligator straps.
