The "Lancieri di Montebello" Regiment (8th) has a history spanning over a century and is the only unit of the Italian Cavalry whose origins and name derive directly from a specific feat of arms. Today it is part of the "Granatieri di Sardegna" Mechanized Brigade and is stationed in Rome where
performs guard and public duties.
During World War II the regiment was reformed as Armored Reconnaissance Grouping "Lancieri di Montebello". After the announcement of the Armistice of Cassibile on 8 September 1943, the grouping fought in the defense of Rome.
