Karl Hahn’s firm was established in 1873, emerging as an important supplier to the imperial court during the reign of Empress Alexander III. During the period of Nicholas II, the firm was passed onto Karl’s son, Dmitrii Karlovich, who continued in the role of purveyor to the Court. Production for Hahn was executed by two major workshops, working exclusively for the company. At the time of the present lot’s production, Carl Blank, the son of a Finnish blacksmith, had recently been appointed as head workmaster: a position he would hold for seventeen years. Significant commissions undertaken by the firm include the coronation crown of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, alongside various other orders and presentation articles.
