rectangular, the lid centred with an enamel painting of Columbus Breaking the Egg, after the engraving by William Hogarth (1752), within a black taille d'épargne border of stylised acanthus leaves alternating with graduated rose-cut diamonds, bordered by opaque pale blue enamel bands, the sides and base similarly decorated around translucent dark blue enamel over moiré engine-turning, framed in interlaced gold paillon borders, rubbed Hanau cogwheel mark only, in the original shagreen presentation case,
