“Araminta Ross, struck down from a slaveholder, has a vision of her future self-the free Harriet Tubman. She reaches up for a key, both for the shackle on her arm, and to unlock her own inner strength to fulfill her destiny. This ‘generational key’ inspires viewers to reach within themselves to unlock their own inner strength. The oxen yoke represents the yoke of slavery and the shackles/chains depict all of the lives affected by slavery.

While Tubman used the North Star to navigate out of bondage, she then became the compass rose for the thousands of enslaved who followed her guiding light to Freedom. This sculpture tells Tubman’s story, so that all may learn from it; that amplifies her message of equality, so that all may hear it; and that chronicles her journey, with the hope that we all find the courage to walk in her footsteps.” – Wesley Wofford
