“As a child growing up in Southern California, I saw great swarms of the western monarch butterfly gathering in the eucalyptus trees on their journey south. It was as if autumn color had come to the green leaves. But they were living beings- extraordinary, beautiful butterflies. 90% of their population has now died off. I am deeply saddened by this and decided to express my feelings in a mythological painting of the ancient Greek goddess, Artemis, protector of the forest and its creatures, as she laments a die off of the monarch butterflies at the imaginary ‘River of Extinction’. But there is still hope, and symbols of my optimism lie within the painting. This is an urgent message for our time.” – Christopher Evans
