"Chase’s interpretation of landscape, or 'Nature'—traditionally the most loaded category in the romantic repertory—is varied and personal. It brings to mind the heady Northern-European line of Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, and Ferdinand Hodler. Chase’s aim, no doubt, is to project different temperamental states of mind through intensely colored imagery of mountains and bursting and rolling clouds."
Ronny H. Cohen, "Louisa Chase: Robert Miller Gallery," Artforum, December 1982, p. 74.
