The friendship between Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire is well known. They met in 1905 and, together with Max Jacob, formed an inseparable trio. It was Picasso who introduced Apollinaire to Marie Laurencin in 1907. In 1918, each served as witness as the other's wedding: Apollinaire's marriage to Jacqueline in May, and Picasso's marriage to Olga in July.

Picasso produced numerous portraits of Apollinaire, including this one, executed at the beginning of their friendship.
