Founded by the Yelü clan and its chieftain Abaoji in 916 CE, the Liao dynasty continued to dominate Northern China until its fall to the Jin in 1125. Maintaining a distinct identity but reliant on Chinese cultural norms and practices to support their rule, the ethnically Khitan rulers of Liao developed their own Khitan writing systems based on Chinese characters but wrote also in a modified form of Classical Chinese surviving today almost exclusively in royal epitaphs and pendants, including a closely related inscription uncovered from the tomb of Shangguo Dujian Taifu, preserved in the Museum of Ethnic Cultures, Minzu University of China, Beijing.
