Ren Lansheng (1838–1888), a celebrated figure in Suzhou, dedicated his early life to charitable efforts with his father. He began his official career in 1858 due to military achievements but was impeached and returned home in 1884. There, he had the painter Yuan Long create Tuisi Garden, named for a concept from the Zuo Zhuan reflecting on loyalty and repentance. Completed in 1887, the garden is still a famous site in Tongli today. Ren, also a notable collector, had parts of his collection auctioned at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 1992 by his descendants.
