(i) "Problèmes d'echecs extraits de divers auteurs [...] 1er Volume. 1844", with 1088 numbered diagrammatic representations of chess positions, each with marginal notations and commentary, with index (15 pages), altogether c.560 pages, 4to (205 x 155mm), marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, bumped
(ii) "Problèmes d'echecs extraits de divers auteurs [...] 3eme Volume. 1855", with 1040 numbered diagrammatic representations of chess positions (numbered from 2573 to 3612), most with marginal notations and commentary (but some remaining blank), 520 pages, plus blanks, 4to (200 x 155mm), marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, spine partially detached, bumped
This is a very substantial collection of chess problems drawn from a range of named sources and with solutions carefully added in the margins. "Saint-Elme le Duc" was the pseudonym of Jean Pierre Elme Leduc, a Parisian businessman and author of a number of books on French history (d.1861).
