the base with a six character Yongzheng yuannian jianzhi (made under supervision in the first year of the Yongzheng reign) mark in underglaze blue within a double circle

Dated porcelains from the Yongzheng period (1723–1735) are rare, let alone those dated to the first year of the reign. To date, only six other dishes of this rare type appear to survive: a pair in an important European private collection; a pair from the collection of T.T. Tsui, illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art. Chinese Ceramics IV: Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 28; and a pair from the collections of Sir John Wormald, Mr. and Mrs. Brodie Lodge and Leonore and Walter F. Brown, sold most recently at Christie’s New York, 25th September 2020, lot 1586.
