woodblock print, from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1832

Pilgrims and travellers on the Tokaido climb steps towards a mountain shrine dedicated to Kannon, the Boddhisatva of Compassion. At the summit, one pilgrim drops to his knees in prayer. Emerging from forested cliffs, a narrow stream trickles down the rock face, while below a cluster of thatched teahouses and wayside restaurants shelter visitors pausing to rest. The unusually clear waters here were popularly known as Kiyotaki, or the ‘pure waterfall’.1
