Description

woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834

Horizontal oban: 25.5 x 37.5 cm, 10 by 14¾ in.

A line of boats joined together side-by-side using plank forms a ‘boat bridge’ (funabashi) in this snow-covered landscape. Although this type of bridge was not uncommon, the boat bridge at Sano in Kozuke province was especially well known.
