On a rocky outcrop above churning waters, a fisherman casts his lines into the waves. Beside him, a young boy sits with a fishing basket. The waters are turbulent close to the bank but settle into calm further out. Rising through the hazy morning mist, Mount Fuji appears as little more than an outline, its silhouette echoing the arc of the cast nets below.

Kajikazawa [lit. Kajika Marsh] lies to the southwest of Kofu, the capital of Kai Province, at the confluence of two swift-flowing tributaries that together form the Fuji River. But here, the roiling spray of the water below is more evocative of ocean waves than river currents.

Kajikazawa in Kai Province is one of forty-six designs published between 1831-33 in Hokusai's celebrated series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (see Lots 188-199), initially conceived as a set of thirty-six images before being extended in response to its popularity.
