woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1832, blue outline

Horizontal oban: 25.8 x 37.8 cm, 10⅛ by 14⅞ in.

Against a vast open sky, workmen repair the roof of the Hongan-ji Temple in Asakusa. A kite soars in the distance and the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji emerges through clouds on the horizon. Scaffolding towers rise above the myriad roofs nestled in the forested streets below. The steeply pitched gable of the temple roof and the gentle curvature of the kite string both echo the slopes of Mount Fuji in the playful fashion typical of Hokusai in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
