Acquired from an antique dealer in Bordeaux in 2018.

Expressive censers of this type, combining the archaic bronze 'Xu' form and archaistic designs with expressive quasi-baroque details, are typical of wares produced on the orders of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1735-1795). Compare an almost identical censer, likely the pair to the present, sold in our London rooms, 15th February 1072, lot 12, and again, Christie's New York, 20th September 2005, lot 112; and a closely related censer of Qianlong mark and period with similar zoomorphic feet and handles preserved in the Qing Court Collection in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum.
