modelled with a peasant mother dressed in a black overcoat and green and black polka dot headscarf steadying her intoxicated husband, with her child grasping at her skirt beside her, her husband clutching a bottle in one hand, his hat and shoe strewn on the ground beside him, with printed red factory mark

This group of figures depicting peasants and workers were inspired by a number of periodicals published in the mid 19th century which featured lithoprints depicting intoxicated peasants and workers. The genre was popular enough that paintings and drawings of this type were displayed at the St Petersburg Academy of Art. (Gardner XVIII - XIX, Porcelain Plastic Arts.
