Born in Italy in 1881 to a family of actors, Cesare Maggi’s artistic career began very early. Starting formal training in 1897, Maggi moved to Naples at seventeen, had his debut in the 1898 Annual Exhibition of the Society of Fine Arts of Florence, then moved Paris at eighteen to continue his studies. Despite his classical training, he took interest in Symbolist and Divisionist styles, eventually moving to Maloja to paint Alpine landscapes using Divisionist techniques. After signing a commercial contract, Maggi rapidly became a leading figure amongst second generation Divisionist artists in Italy.
