The Royal Collections of Saxony, Japanese Palace, Dresden

Vanderven Oriental Art, 's-Hertogenbosch;

Collection of Henry H. Arnhold;

Sotheby's New York, 24 October 2019, lot 396;

Acquired from the above by the present owner.

Eighteen Japanese Porcelain dishes under the number 89 were included in the 1721 Inventarium über das Palais zu Alt-Dresden, which lists the contents of the Holländische Palais, later to become the Japanese Palace: "N. 89. 1½ Duzt. tiefe Tellern mit vergulden Rändern, 1½ Z. tief und 10¼ Z. indiam.", [N. 89. 1 ½ doz. deep plates with gilt rims, 1½ in. deep and 10¼ in. in diam.] By the 1779 inventory of the Japanese Palace, all eighteen were still included in the collection, though two were badly damaged: "Ein Duzent und 6 Stück tiefe Teller mit vergoldten Rändern, 1½ Zoll tief und 10¼ Zoll in diam. 2 Stk. defect. No. 89", [One dozen and 6 deep plates with gilt rims, 1½ inches deep and 10¼ inches in diam. 2 in poor condition. No. 89.]. Today two examples are retained in the Porzellansammlung, Dresden, inv. nos. PO 2941 and PO 2942.
