Description
the first, a tortoiseshell and wood snuff box, attributed to Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo, Turin, circa 1800, circular with waisted sides, the lid decorated with a microcarving of an opulent flower bouquet in fruitwood, on a tripod stand with ram’s heads to sides and a vine leaf garland across, flanked by trophies of the arts, sciences and music, on a tassled curtain ground, under domed glass, on a tortoiseshell ground, apparently unmarked, 8.3cm., 3 ¼ in. diameter;
the second, a tortoiseshell, thuja and fruitwood snuffbox, also attributed Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo, Turin, late 18th century, circular, the lid decorated with a carved fruitwood military trophy centred with a banner inscribed ‘VIVA LA REPUB. FRANCE, below a bonnet rouge a laurel wreath, framed by a laurel and oak wreath around two small shields with initials LEF and LL, under domed glass, the plain thuja body with tortoiseshell borders and lining, apparently unmarked, 8.6cm., 3 ⅜ in. diameter;
the third, a tortoiseshell and wood snuff box, Francesco Tanadei, Turin, circa 1800, circular, the lid centred with a carved wooden musical trophy, signed: Tanadei J., under domed glass, the tortoiseshell sides and base with paillon circles and stars in two coloured gold, apparently unmarked, 8cm., 3 ⅛ in. diameter;
the fourth, a circular tortoiseshell bonbonniere with silver-gilt mounts, probably Paris, circa 1780, circular with waisted sides, the lid set with a miniature on paper, painted en grisaille with ‘La danse des chiens’, spuriously signed and dated ‘v. Blarenberghe, 1783’ , the ground with painted gold stars, apparently unmarked, 8 cm., 3 ⅛ in. diam.
