This sale is curated around Song dynasty ceramics drawn from a group of private Hong Kong collections, together with wares from the periods immediately preceding and following the Song, tracing both the sources of the Song aesthetic and the reach of its influence. Foremost among them is a Five Dynasties Yaozhou wine boat in the form of a makara — a rare piece, and quite possibly a unique one, appearing at auction for the first time. Its celadon glaze carries the faint pink flush that scholars associate with the so-called 'Dong ware', and the vessel is modelled as a spirited makara, its head raised and mouth agape, in a form seldom encountered in any medium. A large Xing white-glazed jar is of comparable importance: full and finely balanced in profile, covered in a soft, lustrous glaze and preserved in remarkable condition, it ranks among the finest of its type to survive.
