This work is a striking modern interpretation, blending symbolism and Post-Impressionism, of classic compositions of the subject through the ages. The pose recalls Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus, while the division of the background - part drapery, part distant architectural view opening onto a Mediterranean landscape - echoes compositions by Titian. The relaxed posture also brings to mind Goya’s sensuous treatment of the reclining nude, whilst the apple held in her left hand evokes the classical symbolism associated with Canova’s sculptural interpretations of Venus.
