Many consider 15 years to be the perfect age for Van Winkle whiskeys: old enough to develop rich barrel-influenced notes of leather and vanilla, but not so old those influences take over. Until 2004, the 15-year-old was bottled under the Old Rip Van Winkle brand in a squat, or barrel, bottle – ever since it's been sold under the Pappy Van Winkle line in a taller, cognac-style bottle, making this release an alluring historical artifact.
