Description
Sazerac Whiskey Cocktail 34.5 abv NV
Prepared and bottled by Thomas H. Handy & Co. Limited Sole Proprietors. New Orleans La, 6 Cent Cordials wine stamp adhered to front of bottle, front label worn and soiled
This bottle is believed to date from the early 1900s when Thomas H. Handy Co., a New Orleans Liquor merchant and then owner of the Sazerac brand, were offering premixed bottled cocktails including Whiskey, Manhattan, Martini, Tom Gin, Holland Gin and Vermouth (see 1902 advert included within lot images. Source: Wondrich Collection).
Unlike the classic Sazerac, the bottled 'Whiskey' cocktail was said to contain no absinthe or substitute, since the user was supposed to add this as a rinse for the glass. It was also said to have contained a couple of secret ingredients: Angostura bitters along with the Peychaud's (which the company owned) and a splash of maraschino liqueur.
