Having attended the Accademia di Brera in his native Milan, Alfredo Pina moved to Paris around 1906 and first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1912. The young Italian sculptor worked in Auguste Rodin's atelier from 1909-10 and his master's impact is evident in Pina's powerful style of modelling. The expressive form of the present model of Saint John the Baptist epitomises the artist's distinctive style.
