Bust of Princess Louise of Prussia

bronze, on a veined grey marble and gilt bronze pedestal

bust: 16.5cm., 6½in.

36cm., 14⅛in. overall

The present bronze represents a fine small-scale reduction of the first version of Schadow's bust of Princess Luise of Prussia, modelled in 1794. The original plaster is housed in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Alongside the bust of Luise's sister Frederica which was created at the same time, this portrait would form the basis of the sculptor's celebrated full-length double portrait in marble, the Prinzessinnengruppe of 1795, also in the Nationalgalerie (inv. no. B II 34). A unique life-size bronze version of Schadow's 1799 adaptation of Luise's portrait bust, cast around 1820 by the Werner foundry in Berlin, is held in the Art Institute, Chicago (inv. no. 2006.104).
