A sought-after draftsman and sculptor of the Napoleonic era, Jean Guillaume Moitte produced many drawings in ‘the antique style’, which were fashionable among the contemporary collectors and were often used as designs for engravings.

The present pair of allegorical drawings is heavily influenced by Moitte’s sculptural work, stylistically resembling the low reliefs he created after studying classical sculpture during the two years he spent in Rome.
