The FIFA Order of Merit was presented to Udo Jürgens by Franz Beckenbauer on 28th of September 1996. This presentation, in part for Udo's charity work, is significant as he was the first entertainer to receive the award.
The FIFA Order of Merit was the highest honor awarded by the 'Fédération Internationale de Football Association' (FIFA). It was awarded to people or associations that are considered having made a significant contribution to football.
Between 1984 and 2012 the FIFA Order of Merit was awarded 121 times. Most of the recipients were football players, trainers or clubs but also 21 other individuals who were not directly linked to football were given this honor - one of them being Udo Jürgens in 1996.
