Galerie Kugel, Paris;

From whom acquired by Aso O. Tavitian, 23 January 2007.

This group is very similar, both in style and subject-matter, to the ivory reliefs seen on cups and tankards produced in South Germany, particularly in Augsburg, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The treatment of the putti surrounding the base of the sculpture, with their plump bodies and chubby faces, shows the influence of the 17th century Flemish artist François Duquesnoy, who was known for his whimsical depiction of frolicking putti.
