Description

inscribed ANTONIO GVSELA

silver-mounted boxwood, with a modern metal stand

length 16 in.

40.8 cm

Kunstkammer Georg Laue, Munich;

From whom acquired by Aso O. Tavitian at TEFAF Maastricht, 27 March 2011.

A boxwood relief of Saint Anthony of Padua by Gusela was offered at Sotheby’s Paris on 25 September 2024; it was signed ANTO / NIO / GUSELA. F. / IN BELLUNO, and inscribed DISSEPO / LO / BRUSTOLONI / 1757.

Gusela came from Belluno in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. The inscription on the Saint Anthony relief indicates that Gusela was a pupil of the Brustolon family of wood carvers who also came from Belluno. The most famous member of the family was Andrea Brustolon (1662-1732) who trained under the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi.
