This mirror case is closely comparable to one in the Khalili collection attributed to Najaf 'Ali and Muhammad Isma'il (Khalili et al 1997, cat.233, p.36-38). In both examples the front of the case exhibits work similar to Najaf 'Ali's monumental European style. The scene takes place in a landscape with a red curtain draped across the top corner, and it is likely that the current example has been influenced by a European print with the sculpted figures, heavy drapery and stippled skin. The back of the case, however, has been attributed to Muhammad Isma'il and his 'Frankish' style, the central scene of small, round faced figures takes place within a lobed cartouche surrounded by smaller vignettes of hunting and other scenes. It is also comparable in the foliated cartouche to one sold through these rooms, The Collection of the Berkeley Trust, 12 October 2006, lot 44
