Alberto di Castro, Rome;

From whom acquired by Aso O. Tavitian, 25 March 2008.

This vase draws its inspiration from antiquity and is possibly a copy of an actual antique Roman model. Such works were avidly collected by 18th-century aristocrats and connoisseurs, and their designs were frequently disseminated through engravings. Certain elements such as the ribbon-tied branches, twig-form handles and relief-carved bird appear in examples of antique vases in the Museo Pio Clementino in the Vatican, published in 1821 as plates 27, 28, and 30 of Caro Antonini's Manuale di vari ornamenti componenti la serie de' vasi antichi.
