Vincenzo Gemito explored portraiture throughout his career, with one of his most repeated and popular subjects being the Philosopher, modeled off of his adoptive father, Francesco Jadiciccio. The Philosopher, with his long, richly textured beard, and intense stare bares a striking resemblance to the present portrait bust of the sculptor himself.
Conceived when Gemito was sixty-three years old, the current work can be read as a pendant to his earlier sculpture of his adoptive father.
