The model is based on an antique Roman sepulchral monument from the Appian Way in the form of a boar's head rhyton, engraved by Piranesi in Vol.II of his Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi (1778). The design was was produced by several firms during the first quarter of the nineteenth century including James De Ville in the Strand, London, and the bronze manufactory of Thomas Messenger and Sons of Birmingham.
