formed of a whole shell of a Geometric tortoise (Psammobates geometricus) mounted in polished gold, the head enamelled in shades of grey and beige around gold-mounted ruby eyes, the enamelled feet with diamond-set claws and the tail resting on a later gold base forming the lid of the box, early 19th century, inset with larger-patterned plastron tortoiseshell from the same species, surrounded by sablé gold, engraved with scrolls, apparently unmarked,
