Description
Hausmann, Johann Friedrich Ludwig
Untersuchungen über die Formen der leblosen Natur. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht, 1821
4to (235 x 195 mm). 16 folding engraved plates; scattered light spotting. Contemporary half calf over blue marbled boards, spine lettered gilt; extremities lightly rubbed.
First edition of Hausmann’s pioneering study on the external forms of inorganic bodies. A disciple of Abraham Gottlob Werner, Hausmann sought to classify minerals according to their geometric structure and natural form rather than solely by chemical composition, anticipating later developments in crystallography and crystal physics.
