Description

School of Fontainebleau, circa 1550

Roman Charity

Oil on panel

87,4 x 81 cm ; 34⅜ by 31⅞ in.

Very finely executed, this Roman Charity can be associated with the first School of Fontainebleau, in about 1550.

The restrained palette of grey and broken whites, the delicate, cool colours and Charity’s profile, whose hairstyle is particularly refined, all inevitably evoke the art of the Master of Flora and the works grouped under this name.

Although very certainly painted in France in the mid-sixteenth century, some aspects are also reminiscent of the northern manner, especially the strong, sculptural figure of Cimon, recalling some images of St Jerome painted in the Netherlands in the same period.
