16 x 47,5 cm ; 6¼ by 18¾ in.

We are grateful to Monsieur Marc Stammegna, who confirmed the authentication of this painting based on photographs.

Anonymous sale, D'authier De Sisgaw-Charriaud, Marseille, Hôtel des ventes Prado-Borde, 20 February 1993, lot 320 (titled Les Cavaliers);

Where acquired, private collection, France;

Thence by descent to the present owner.

This composition forms part of a series of works painted by Monticelli on a moulded panel, detached from a sideboard.

The artist’s characteristic thick, laden brushstroke is in evidence here, as well as a profusion of colours which would notably inspire Van Gogh. As was often his practice, Monticelli painted figures wearing outmoded clothes, anchoring the scene in an idealized past, in which the figures seems to be having courtly and tranquil conversations.
