Description

Workshop of Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian

Portrait of a Lady, Called La Bella

Oil on canvas

102 x 73,6 cm ; 40⅛ by 29 in.

Collection Leo van Puyvelde, Chief Curator of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium;

By descent to the present owner.

From the collection of Leo van Puyvelde, this painting is a reprise of Titian’s famous masterpiece, La Bella, painted in about 1536 and now in the Palazzo Pitti (inv. 18).

The present version, which is difficult to read because of the very obvious presence of thick yellow varnish and a degree of widespread wear probably linked to its relining, nevertheless displays sections of very fine quality in some places, which support the likelihood that it was produced in the master’s workshop.
