The DeSmet medal is the highest honor of Crosby's alma matter, Gonzaga University, and was conferred upon Crosby in 1968. The medal is named for a Jesuit missionary, Father Pierre Jean DeSmet.

Bing attended Gonzaga University but left before graduating to focus on his music career. He received an honorary degree from Gonzaga University in 1937 and remained a life-long supporter of the school, contributing in 1957 to its campaign to construct a new library. Gonzaga honored him with its highest award, the DeSmet Medal, in 1968.
