FLOWN APOLLO 9 CREW MISSION EMBLEM

CARRIED ON THE FIRST CREWED FLIGHT USING THE LUNAR MODULE IN MARCH 1969

Apollo 9 embroidered mission emblem, 4-inches in diameter, mounted on a TLS by Gordon Cooper.

 

Originally from the personal collection of Gemini V Command Pilot Gordon Cooper

Gordon Cooper’s Typed Letter Signed reads: “This patch was carried on Apollo IX, the first manned flight of the lunar module. I was training as back-up commander for Apollo X at the time. Apollo IX is often overlooked, but it was a very important mission testing the lunar and command modules, especially related to their rendezvous capabilities.

Jim McDivitt and his crew played a vital role to enable the United States to reach the goal of landing men on the moon by the end of 1969."

 

In addition to serving as backup crew on Apollo 10, Gordon Cooper flew on Mercury-Atlas 9 and Gemini V.
