FLOWN AMERICAN FLAG, PRESENTED TO SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE CARL ALBERT
US Flag measures 4 x 6, with text printed under flag “THIS FLAG WAS CARRIED TO THE MOON ABOARD APOLLO 16 DURING THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION OF THE LUNAR HIGHLANDS, APRIL 16-27, 1972.” Presented with photograph of CDR John Young’s famous “Jump Salute.”
INSCRIBED “To Speaker Carl Albert with appreciation for your strong leadership over the years,” and SIGNED by JOHN YOUNG, KEN MATTINGLY, and CHARLES DUKE. Framed under glass with Apollo 16 mission emblem and a typed quote by Renee Descartes: “There is nothing so far removed from us so as to be beyond our reach, or so hidden that we cannot discover it.”
Carl Bert Albert (1908-2000), 46th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1971-1977, Representative, Oklahoma’s 3rd congressional district from 1947 to 1977; by descent.
Apollo 16 was the first landing in the Descartes Highlands on the lunar surface. The included photograph depicts Commander John Young performing a jumping salute to the American flag, with the Lunar Module and Lunar Roving Vehicle in the background. Young completed three EVAs in the Descartes Highlands with Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, making him the ninth person to walk on the Moon.
Carl Albert served as the 46th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1971-1977, which coincided with Apollo missions 14, 15, 16, and 17. He represented Oklahoma’s 3rd congressional district from 1947-1977.
