Description
[APOLLO 10]
FLOWN cloth flag of the United States of America, [May 18-26, 1969], 4 by 6¼ inches, and embroidered mission patch mounted on paper signed by TOM STAFFORD, JOHN YOUNG, AND GENE CERNAN. Presented to KENT B. CRANE with the thanks of the crew. Presentation measures 11 x 14 inches.
FLOWN ON APOLLO 10 SPACECRAFT AT THE FASTEST SPEED HUMANS HAVE EVER TRAVELED.
Apollo 10 was the second crewed mission to the Moon, meant to function as a “dress rehearsal” for the Apollo 11 moon landing that would occur just two months later. The Apollo 10 Lunar Module, "Snoopy," came within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface to better "snoop" out a landing site for the historic Moon landing.
On their return, the Apollo 10 Command Module "Charlie Brown" clocked an incredible speed of just over just over 39,937 kilometers per hour right before re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, setting a speed record yet to be matched by any other spacecraft.
This flag was flown on Apollo 10 and included in this presentation to KENT B. CRANE, an aide to Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, president of American International Investments, and who had apparently worked with the CIA.
